At 94, we all lost Granny Chick, Chickee, everyone's grandmother here in the hills.
[Rebecca Herrin]

Chickee’s funeral is tomorrow.  [Feb 12,2008] She was a quilter.  She sold her quilts for many years and did quilting for other folks, some even internationally.  She had great stories.  For the first three years after I moved to Pineville, I would often sleep at Phil and Cubby’s.  The downstairs of their house was basically Chick’s area, with a small kitchen, two bedrooms (the guest room being called ‘cell block one) and a nice bath.  She also had a large room for her quilting frame.  So there were many, many conversations with her, coffee, games played like dominoes, SkipBo, and others.  She was a little ornery sometimes, but also a Christian and we had some great talks in that subject, too.  Cubby, Chick and I would also try to walk every morning at least a mile in the hills.  Chickee was slow so sometimes we would double up on our walks to keep her amused, too.  I have two quilts that she gave me, another that she made for me in particular and Mom has one she made for her with butterflies.  Mom loves butterflies so Chick had fun doing it for Mom.  She and Mom seldom saw each other but did correspond.  Mom (and I) collect antique beads.  These are our treasures so Mom sent Chick a necklace she had made from beads circa about 1890.  Guess that is about all I can tell you about Chick.  Oh, her husband, Ethan, died about 30+ years ago.  She never quit talking about him and how kind he was.  Pretty neat.

[From an email sent to a friend.  We will put together a memorial page soon for Chick so please check back.  Everyone has 'Chick stories' so share if you like.  My deepest sympathy to her daughters, Cubby, Peewee, and Marion.  And to her grandchildren, especially my  friends, Doug and Allan Hall.]
