Mark Norton who will present
Swift Creek Designs at Pinson Mounds - Update
Last July I presented the complicated stamped sherds recovered at Pinson
that appear to be Swift Creek style designs. Since then, I have visited
Dr. Frankie Snow

the Swift Creek design expert at South Georgia College. Dr. Snow
provided valuable insights to the Pinson Swift Creek assemblage, paddle
design, and possible connections to the core Swift Creek area. This
presentation will include an updated paddle design from Pinson, as well
as drawings of three other designs that may represent Pinson and/or
rituals taking place at this Middle Woodland period (200 BC-500 AD)
mound complex.
Thanks to Dr. Sarah Sherwood for providing the excellent presentation on
Shiloh Mounds at our December meeting.

White Bluff, TN |
Yo! To those
interested in flint knapping. We'll be doing a mini knap-in January 14,

from White Bluff, TN, which is about twenty minutes west of Nashville,
on Highway 70. Also, he lives about five minutes away from the
Moundbottom State Archaeological Park.
This will be an indoor event, unless it's nice out, and there'll be some
chow, maybe some trading, and anybody with stuff to sell, bring it on.
We'll probably start around 8:00 am and go until dark, and then maybe
some. Call me if you need specific directions. My cell number is
615/693-1087, or email me back and I'll send you some get-theres. --- Rick Taylor

Dillard
Flintknapping Workshop
March 23, 24, and
25, 2012
Tim Dillard will
be teaching a flintknapping class next March at the Desert Studies
Center. The total cost of the class for each person is $225.00.
The meals and
sleeping accommodations are $98.00. The class itself is $127.00. If you
wish to take the class, please send two checks or money orders to the
address indicated below. One check or money order for $98.00 should be
paid to the order of the Desert Studies Center. The second check or
money order for $127.00 should be written to Tim Dillard. I am sorry
that neither Tim nor the Center takes credit cards.
The class will
start at 7:00 PM on Friday evening, March 23, 2011, with demonstrations
by Tim. Students will be flintknapping with Tim all day Saturday and
Sunday morning and early afternoon.
The workshop is
not affiliated with any institution and no academic credit can be
given. The practicum will focus on the knapping of various materials.
Obsidian and some chert will be supplied. Although hammerstone use and
pressure flaking will be covered, the use of antler-billet percussion to
manufacture bifaces will be the primary focus of the class (copper
billets will not be used). Hafting, fletching, dart throwing, debitage
identification, etc. will not be taught in this class.
Tim likes to teach
all stages of percussion reduction. Initial reduction and
sectioning/spalling of raw material will be taught. Class members will
have the opportunity to work with some heat-treated cherts.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own raw materials if they
desire materials with certain qualities.
The Desert Studies
Center is located in San Bernardino County, California off Interstate
15, southwest of the town of Baker. The freeway off-ramp is Zzyzx
Road. To find the Center, drive south on Zzyzx Road four miles until
you reach a cluster of buildings. Zzyzx Road is paved for most of the
four miles; there is one small section that is dirt and gravel. The
Center is situated on the shore of Soda Dry Lake at an elevation of 237
meters (938 feet) amsl and at the western edge of the Mojave National
Preserve.
Each participant
should bring pillows and bedclothes or a sleeping bag, since only
mattresses are provided by the Center. The bathrooms are separate from
the sleeping accommodations. The cafeteria-style meals include a snack
on Friday night, breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, bag lunches on
Saturday and Sunday, and dinner Saturday evening.
Gloves and pieces
of leather or other protective material, to be used for hand protection
and lap pads, should be brought for use in the class.
Copper pressure
flakers will be provided. Also, antler billets for use during the class
will be supplied. Long pants and shoes that cover the feet must be worn
at all times while flintknapping. The Center has protective glasses
that may be used by workshop participants.

Dillard May 28 to June 1, 2012
The Center for
American Archaeology is pleased to offer a week-long, hands-on workshop
in flaked-stone tool manufacturing technology as a part of our summer
calendar in 2012. Tim Dillard, a phenomenal flintknapper with thirty
years of experience, will lead the course.
Lectures on
flaked-stone reduction, chert, quarrying strategies, local geology, and
technical aspects of knapping will set the stage for work sessions that
will include billet percussion and pressure flaking techniques. Tim is
the master of the use of the traditional antler billet for percussion
flaking. Chert collection trips and heat-treating sessions are also a
part of the week’s activities. Experienced and novice flintknappers
alike are invited to take advantage of this exceptional opportunity.
Tuition is $550
for the week and includes room, basic field lunch (sandwiches, chips,
fruit, etc.) each day, and instruction from Tim. Each person also gets
a one-year membership to the Center for American Archaeology.
Breakfast and dinner are on your own. Dorms are equipped with
refrigerator, microwave, coffee pot, hotplate, outdoor grill, and
campfire area. Also, there are two local restaurants. If you have
your own tools, please feel free to bring them, but it is not required.
Participants will stay at one of the bunkhouse-style dormitories on the
Center for American Archaeology campus. The class is limited to 12
people.
Participants are
responsible for making their own transportation arrangements. The Center
can provide shuttle service to and from Lambert-St. Louis International
Airport or the Alton, Illinois Amtrak station for a fee of $20.00 each
way.

CAMP
MARYMOUNT KNAP-IN
Click here to take a look at
'Camp Marymount Knap-in'
on
YouTube for some visual details!
2nd Annual
Camp Marymount Knap-In will be held the last weekend of October.
October 28, 29, and 30.
The Camp is located in
Fairview, Tennessee, seven miles west of Nashville on Highway 100. The
address is 1318 Fairview Boulevard 37062, and you can find both
directions to the camp and a description at
www.CampMarymount.com.
There will be flint knappers from
several states attending, demonstrating the art of fashioning
arrowheads, spears and knives of various stones, selling their artwork,
and selling both tools and raw materials. In addition, there will be
some guys demonstrating the use of spear throwers, called atlatls,
which preceded the use of the bow and arrow in Tennessee. There will
also be a man showing how Native Americans used plants and plant fibers,
and another man who sets up a primitive forge. There will also be
demonstrations of hide preparation, and probably a potter or two showing
how clay was used to form pottery vessels. A vendor will be on site
selling burgers, drinks, and such. School groups will be invited to
attend, and the Marymount Nature Center will be open to the public. The
event is open to the public at no charge, and a small vendors’ fee is
charged for those selling to the public. There will be T-shirts
available for sale, and a no-charge drawing for a variety of items will
be had at noon on Sunday. It is possible that horseback tours might be
available for a small fee if there’s enough interest; Camp Marymount has
several miles of beautiful wooded trails. A book vendor and
authenticator will be present.
There are several places
available on the camp for tent camping, at no charge, and several places
for parking RVs and motor homes, but no hook-ups are provided. There
are shower houses on the camp, and rustic cabins with bunk beds are
available at $5 per night. The nice group cabins are available up front
for $12.50 per night/bed.
We may have a big breakfast
Sunday morning for a nominal charge, if there is enough interest. This
event was very well attended last year and is closest knap-in to the
Nashville area, and I believe is the last knap-in of the calendar year,
so Christmas sales are likely. If travelers want to come a day early,
and/or stay a day late, there’s no problem, just let us know you are
coming or staying. Contact Rick Taylor at 615/693-1087, or at
Taylors144@juno.com, for more
information. |

December 6,

Greetings: My
friend, Lionel Barrett, will speak at 7:00 p.m. on December 6, Tuesday,
at the City Court in Dickson, Tennessee, to the Dickson County
Archaeological Society.
His subject will be the Cotaco Creek point type, which he has studied
for many years, and which is the subject of a treatise he is preparing.
He'll have a bunch of specimens to view, and anyone with Cotaco Creeks
is invited to bring them to be viewed.
Lionel is an outstanding speaker and is extremely knowledgeable about
the distribution, variation, chronology, context, and utilization of
this type of prehistoric lithic. The venue is easy to find, its at the
intersection of East Walnut and Main Street in Dickson.
We'll get together at Shoneys at 6:00 to eat a bite. This is a great
opportunity for kids, too, so come on over. Email me or call me if
there are any questions. My cell is 615/693-1087. See you there.
Best wishes, Rick

The Old Stone Fort Archaeological Society will meet
Thursday, December 8th at 6:00 pm at the Old Stone Fort
Museum in Manchester, Tennessee. Our meetings are free and open to the
public. Our program this month:
Dr. Sarah Sherwood
who will present Mississippian Mound Construction at
Shiloh, Tennessee
Dr. Sarah Sherwood teaches archaeology and anthropology at Sewanee
University. Dr. Sherwood has worked on many archaeological sites
throughout the southeast including the famous Dust Cave in northern
Alabama, and Shiloh Mounds near Savannah, Tennessee.
At Shiloh, a Mississippian period mound group and village dating to 1000
– 1350 AD are located on the bluff above Pittsburg Landing, within the
Shiloh National Military Park. The site consists of six Late
Mississippian earthen mounds, which include temple and house mounds that
were surrounded by a palisade wall. A Late woodland burial mound and
associated village are also located here, which predates the
Mississippian complex. This is the largest extant Mississippian Mound
Complex in the Tennessee River Valley. This mound complex is on the
National Register of Historic Places and has been designated a National
Historic Landmark.
In 2001, The National Park Service began an extensive archaeological
investigation of Mound A at Shiloh due to the bluff erosion that was
slowly destroying it. Three seasons of investigations on Mound A
provided a wealth of information on the various building stages of the
mound, structures built on the mound, and multiple radiocarbon dates
that provide valuable insights into to the Native Americans who built
and lived at this monumental site. The second phase of this project
involved limestone rip-rap and other stabilization techniques to prevent
future erosion of the bluff and Mound A by the Tennessee River.
Dr. Sherwood’s presentation will highlight the discoveries made during
this archaeological project and describe how this site fits within the
Mississippian Southeast.See you Thursday, Mark Information:

MONTHLY Gatherings Year Round 2012 |
|
|
Let us know if you have a small, personal
gathering on a regular basis that you would like to have posted here.
There are
probably local folks to your area who would love to visit your group.
Our group, JOMO, enjoy teaching and sharing flintknapping skills as well
as other primitive skills. As gasoline prices soar, many folks
will attend fewer large commercial knap-ins; it is becoming a costly
outing. So consider starting your own group for fun and sharing
what you know. |

We welcome you to our
monthly flintknapping gatherings. ANYONE is welcome to
come and participate or observe. Beginners and wannabe's are
welcome. Jim Spears and the gang will be glad to help you get a good a
start.
Our core group is Christian and strives to
behave as such so please do not bring any drugs or alcohol. However,
please DO bring food for the picnic table! Also, bringing a chair and
safety glasses is a very good idea, too. If you are into bow building and atlatls,
bring 'em! We love to shoot and throw and have a nice place to do it.
Several of the guys are
excellent bow builders and will enjoy talking shop with you.
This is not a commercial knap-in so no one sets up to sell. While there
is no problem with buying a rock from a buddy, selling is not our focus with
this gathering.
Please email with questions to

either an indoor or outdoor place to chip!)
