Toshiya Historical Archery contest at
Sanjusangendo
The historical archery contest has been held at Sanjusangendo since the
Edo period (1603-1868). Originally, when all the competitors were
warriors, the competition would last the entire day and night; now it
lasts seven hours. Each year, more than 1,000 archers, all in
traditional costume, compete in a contest that taxes both physical
strength and mental tenacity. The archers fire several arrows at targets
one meter in diameter over a distance of sixty meters to decide the
grand champion. An additional bonus is that as the contest takes place
on Coming of Age day, many of the spectators will be wearing spectacular
kimonos. Admission is free. for more information http://www.wcities.com/en/record/202,317154/115/record.html |

The Old Stone
Fort
The events are termed as Celebrations of Archaeoskills.
Archaeo meaning
primitive, we like the description for an aboriginal technology event.
It has always been an knap-in and has long included atlatl competition.
Many other activities and demonstration are included.
The Old Stone
Fort is a 2000 year old hilltop enclosure ceremonial site that has been
termed the most strikingly situated of Woodland sacred places. The park
features a campground enjoyed by participants. Manchester (within a
couple of miles) has over 1300 motel rooms. You may recognize this area
as the home of the most profitable festival in the world - Bonnaroo - on
the summer solstice week.
The 50 acre
enclosure called the Old Stone Fort is situated in the forks of the Duck
River with cliffs and waterfalls on both sides of the walled enclosure.
This remarkable setting includes a set of in-turned parallel walls that
are within a degree of the summer solstice rise point.

OSAGE KNAP-IN ~ The Great One!
|
What Are Knap-Ins? They are
gatherings of craftsmen who replicate stone tools used by
ancient civilizations (i.e.: stone arrow & atlatl points,
knives, and axes). These events are used to exchange
replication methods and ideas, teach the craft to new
Knappers, and they are social events for people who share
common interests in archeology and primitive crafts. The
Osage Knap-In is an event that has been ongoing for over two
decades and has grown from just five participating craftsmen
to hundreds from all over the country. It is one of the
first and largest events of this kind in the USA and has a
reputation as one of the best. The best Knappers in the
country regularly attend this event. |

|

JOMO Monthly Knap-In
Pineville, Missouri
on Little Sugar Creek
We welcome you to our occasional, sorta monthly knapping gatherings.
ANYONE is welcome to come and participate or observe. Beginners and
wannabe's are especially welcome and Jim Spears is normally here to help
you get a good a start.
Our core group is Christian and strives to behave as such so please do
not bring any drugs or alcohol. However, please DO bring food for the
picnic table! Also, do bring a chair and safety glasses are a very good
idea. If you are into bows and atlatls, bring 'em! We love to shoot and
throw. Many of the guys are excellent bow builders and enjoy talking
shop with you.
This is not a commercial knap-in so no one sets up to sell. There's no
problem with buying a rock from a buddy but we just do not want selling
to be the focus here.
Please email with questions to either:
