Description of Staves
Stave ID ALL staves listed here are bark-off.
Unless specified, ALL are just a couple grow rings (GR) on the back.

Diana's Fine Print: All this wood will make a bow but how good and functional a bow comes from a piece of this wood is up to nature which we cannot control and up to your skills which we cannot predict. In other words, no guarantees, replacements, or returns, period. I reserve the right to be ONLY KINDLY chastised by customers if I make a mistake describing this wood. When you get serious about a piece of wood, ASK QUESTIONS. EMAIL!

And if you love what you get, please drop an email for Jim Spears or Michael Dees who have done ALL the hard work preparing these staves for you to enjoy. These are super fellows who appreciate your patronage. Keep checking back for more wood as they will be working all summer.
(Except for when the White Bass run or a knap-in steals them away!)

1 Flat back, super great SNAKE, needs riser for handle.

2 Fun snaky stave, flatest GR you can imagine. very few but there are some tiny pin knots

3 Fairly straight and flat, few pin knots, back grain rolls of edge one end, see pictures

4 Flat back, 1/4" knot 9-1/2 inches from small end to the side, natural reflex, slight cant bottom end, some propeller small end

5 Little snake, bit propeller top end, FLAT back, night need riser

6 Snaky little dude, bumps but no real knots, a bit of propeller small end - a fun one!

7 Nice stave, small knot upper off center, 1/4 size.

8 Natural deflex, nice straight stave, bit narrow top end

9 Bit narrow top end but graceful bit of snake there, natural reflex, will need a little bit straightening. Good clean wood

10 Nice stave. Flat back, natural reflex, small propeller big end

11 Nice stave. Natural reflex. propeller a bit on small end

12 Shorty. straight & clean. Nice snake kink at top. Tight GR. Natural reflex. Make GREAT horse bow.

13 Flat GR. Natural deflex. gentle snake. Make great horse bow, youth bow or brush bow (Ozarks!)

14 Pretty one! Reasonable GR. flat back, graceful snake at bottom end with a few TINY pin knots

15 Flat GR. Snaky wild but very neat stave. No apparent knots. Down to SAP WOOD only.

16 Beautiful snaky end shorty. Flat GR. slight propeller large end

17 A snake you can love! He wiggles every which way!

18 Flat GRs. one end does have propeller. Natural deflex. no knots. clean wood.

19 Back a bit rounded & undulating. Make a fun bow like no one else has! Natural reflex.

20 Flat and wide GRs. Snaky bear...fun! Weird long spot like a knot only 1/16x1.5" long. Overall straight.

21 Nice stave. Knot free. surface snakes up & down a bit but end GRs are flat. Ends take some interesting paths so you need to see photos before buying this one.

22 Nice little stave. reasonably straight, slight propeller, appears knot free, back is up and down a little bit but no snake.

23 Very clean stave. One end slight propeller.

24 Chased into the sapwood only. Nice stave. A challenging bump on top end just to thrill you and make it pretty. That is about 15" from the top. Pretty flat back otherwise.

25 Interesting stave! Knot free. Centerline runs true but its got some real interesting snake turns! you might want to see picture before ordering... but it will make SOME bowyer smile.

26 Super wide GR. Has a couple 1/4" or smaller knots (see pics). Back at bottom end rounds off one side. Probably not a great stave for beginner bowyer but pretty wood.

27 Flat back and clean. Natural slight twist & stave is not flat.

28 Wow! It's LONG BOW time. Large end needs to be straightened but this is a clean piece of wood!

29 Pretty wood, straight and flat. A bit narrow but may be just what you are looking for to make that perfect primitive bow.

30 Very flat back and exceedingly clear. No knots. Bottom has propeller - but you can straighten that.

31 Sister to #30. Same deal, beautiful, flat and propeller. (2" wide at center)

32 Lovely stave, gentle snake. Few itsibitsy pin knots - LOVE OSAGE AGAIN!

We have the following preformed staves of HICKORY WOOD
TWO AVAILABLE AT THIS MOMENT

(The variety of Hickory is called Pignut or Shagbark which we consider to be THE type of Hickory to use for a bow.  The American Indians did, too!)  These are great and the wood is very clean.  The b
ow profile is penciled on the wood to help you along if you need it.

These staves are excellent for a self bow and a very good choice for beginners!

While it is not necessary to back this stave with anything, you certainly can if you want.  Folks use a variety of materials including sinew, rawhide, bamboo or snakeskin.  Email your preference.

Price is $75 each

Shipping for stave can vary greatly depending on your zip zone.

Thanks for looking!
